  • How to Get Rid of Algae in a Hot Tub
Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Algae in hot tubs is a rare occurrence because they are covered for the majority of the time. Algae needs sunlight to grow and without sunlight that makes it extremely difficult.

Why Algae Will Grow In Your Hot Tub

  • Left hot tub uncovered.
  • Insufficient amount of sanitizer.
  • Bad filtration.
  • Introduction of algae to the water via bathing suits or others.

Getting Rid of Hot Tub Algae (2 OPTIONS)

1. Draining and refilling doesn’t sound like the best solution but it is the most effective. Drain the hot tub and wipe down the interior shell, and clean the filters.

OR

2. Shock the hot tub. This method could drastically affect the chemicals levels in your hot tub and cause TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), which would force you to drain and refill the hot tub.

How to Prevent Algae from Growing in Hot Tubs

It’s as simple as taking care of your hot tub water. Properly sanitized and balanced hot tub water will not grow algae. Make sure the pH levels are between 7.4 & 7.6, your alkalinity falls between 100 & 150ppm (parts per million) and your sanitizer levels are in the right range (3 to 5ppm for chlorine and 2 to 4ppm for bromine).
